Talking About Abortion in the Religious South
posted on January 25, 2013At Salon, Katie McDonough looks at the changing relationship between religion and abortion in the South. Many southern advocates for women’s reproductive rights see the language of “abortion rights” to be the cause of opposition against a woman’s right to choose. James Bowley, Ph.D., a professor of religious studies at Millsaps College, said, “Change the language. Talk about it as women’s reproductive rights. Don’t talk about it as abortion rights. It is a much larger picture than that.”
