With Voting Rights Act Weakened, Black Church Networks Seek More Voters

Religion News Service’s Adelle M. Banks reports that black Christian leaders are working to get more people to the ballot box to combat stricter voting restrictions this election cycle. Voting restrictions, such as new ID laws, in more than 20 states are the result of the Supreme Court’s decision five years ago to invalidate a provision of the Voting Rights Act. The Rev. Michael McBride, the director of Faith in Action, which is involved in voter outreach, said, “Our work is really about making sure that our communities have access to resources, to skills, to tools that can maximize the vote.”
