Why is the Mormon Church Getting Out of the Adoption Business?

At The Daily Beast, Kathryn Joyce reports on LDS Family Services’ announcement that it will no longer provide adoption services. LDSFS, which is a “Mormon Church-owned counseling center and adoption agency,” has long been one of the most prominent American adoption agencies; it was the second-largest member of the National Council for Adoption. According to the agency, which has been accused of taking advantage of Utah’s lax adoption laws to pressure or coerce unwed mothers into signing adoption papers, there are no longer enough young women who wish to pursue adoption to sustain its business model.
