Why A Terrifying Religious Conflict Is Raging In Nigeria

posted on July 16, 2013

At The Atlantic, John Campbell and Asch Harwood report on the violent religious strife that is fracturing Nigeria. The divisions fall along economic, ethnic, and religious lines as Christians and Muslims clash in local conflicts that have left 481 people dead between January and June 2013. They write that in some areas, “the violence has led to ethnic cleansing that recalls the Balkans. Formerly mixed villages or Jos neighborhoods now consist of only one ethnic group. If an outsider is detected, he risks being killed on the spot.”
