In The New Yorker, Patrick Radden Keefe reports on the case of Jean McConville, who disappeared in 1972 during Northern Ireland’s sectarian conflict. Oral histories leaked from Boston College in 2010 revealed that Gerry Adams, now the leader of Northern Ireland’s Sinn Fein party, may have been responsible for McConville’s disappearance. “In most countries, merely being implicated in a murder would be enough to derail a political career. But Adams has a knack for weathering scandals,” Radden Keefe writes.
