Virginia’s New Attorney General Will Not Defend Gay-Marriage Ban

posted on January 23, 2014

NPR reports on new Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring’s announcement that his office would no longer defend Virginia’s ban on same-sex marriage. This statement occurred in the aftermath of a review of Bostic v. Rainey, a high-profile case challenging the state ban. In an interview, Herring said, “As attorney general, I cannot and will not defend laws that violate Virginians’ rights. The commonwealth will be siding with the plaintiffs in this case and with every other Virginia couple whose right to marry is being denied.”
