Virginia Lawmaker Seeks to Clarify Education Law on Religious Exemptions

Susan Svrluga of The Washington Post writes about a proposed resolution put forward by Republican state legislator Thomas Rust that would direct the Virginia Department of Education to examine a law that provides a religious exemption to public schooling. The Home School Legal Defense Association and Organization of Virginia Homeschoolers called the study “a waste of taxpayer resources,” but Rust argued, “…one of the requirements of our Constitution is to provide a free and equal education to students, so we need to be sure we’re doing that. Let the study show what it shows. If it shows we’re doing fine, that will be the end of it.”
