U.S. Steers Clear of “Genocide” Label in Quietly Releasing Report on Rohingya

posted on September 25, 2018

POLITICO’s Nahal Toosi reports, “The State Department on Monday quietly released the results of its investigation into Myanmar’s military campaign against Rohingya Muslims, detailing a slew of atrocities but stopping short of calling the crackdown either a ‘genocide’ or ‘crimes against humanity’ – two designations that carry legal ramifications.” The State Department, which interviewed more than 1,000 survivors of ethnic cleansing in Myanmar for their investigation, found “extreme, large-scale, widespread” violence against the Rohingya. Sarah Margon, the Washington director for Human Rights Watch, said, “What’s missing now is a clear indication of whether the U.S. government intends to pursue meaningful accountability and help ensure justice for so many victims.”
