U.S. Reform Rabbis Install 1st Openly Lesbian Leader

Rachel Zoll of the Associated Press reports that Denise L. Eger will become the first openly gay president of the rabbinical arm of Reform Judaism when she is installed on Monday. Though Reform Judaism was the earliest major Jewish movement to recognize same-sex relationships, acceptance was not the norm in many American Jewish groups until the 2000s. “It really shows an arc of L.G.B.T. civil rights,” Rabbi Eger, who came out publicly in 1990, said in an interview. “I smile a lot—with a smile of incredulousness.”
