Trump Administration Set to Expand Religious Exemptions to Birth Control Coverage

posted on October 22, 2018

The Washington Post’s Samantha Schmidt reports, “The Trump administration is expected to soon issue regulations that would expand religious and moral exemptions for covering birth control in employer health insurance plans, a move that critics say would limit women’s access to contraception.” The new regulations are part of the Trump administration’s broader efforts to prioritize their conception of religious liberty. Schmidt adds that the new rules are expected to face widespread legal opposition: “California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, for example, has argued that the birth control regulations would violate the First Amendment by allowing employers to use religious beliefs as a right to discriminate against employees in denying them a health benefit federally entitled to them in the Affordable Care Act.”
