Trio’s Sacrifice for Civil Rights Remembered

At The Clarion-Ledger, Jerry Mitchell reports on a ceremony on Sunday in Philadelphia, Mississippi, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Ku Klux Klan’s killings of Michael Schwerner, James Chaney, and Andrew Goodman. Local police arrested the three civil rights workers and handed them over to the Klansmen, who shot them in a remote area. At the event, Chaney’s daughter, Angela Lewis, reflected on the progress achieved by activists in the civil rights movement. “With every hateful act, a door was opened for me,” she said.
