The Netflix Series That Should Make Religious People Uncomfortable

For The Atlantic, Matthew J. Cressler writes that the new Netflix show Midnight Mass highlights the problematic components of religion. Cressler writes, “Midnight Mass is religious horror that treats its subject with reverence while, at the same time, offering one of the most thoughtful and thorough critiques of religion you’re likely to encounter in popular culture.” He counters the theory that harm from religion can only come when faith is misguidedly extreme. He writes, “Carefully cordoning off its criticism to only ‘cults’ or fanatics is a mistake and allows well-meaning religious people to avoid self-reflection and perhaps feel more comfortable with the series than they should.”
