The Holocaust Memorial Undone by Another War

posted on April 13, 2022

Masha Gessen of The New Yorker writes about the fate and history of Babyn Yar, a Holocaust memorial in Ukraine that was recently struck by a missile during the Russian invasion. For decades after WWII, the Soviet government refused to erect a memorial on the site where 34,000 Jews were murdered in 36 hours. Gessen outlines the parallel between the memorial and the current onslaught of Russian forces, writing, “None of this had been imaginable, much as the carnage of Babyn Yar was unimaginable.”
