The Feminists Of Zion
posted on August 8, 2013At The New Republic, Allison Kaplan Sommer and Dahlia Lithwick report on the new face of feminism in Israel: an alliance of orthodox and progressive women that have united to protect themselves from fundamentalism. The Haredim, the ultra-Orthodox branch of Judaism and a growing political power, spit and curse at women who dress “immodestly,” even resorting to violence to enforce adherence to their strict guidelines. However, Nili Philipp, an activist leading the effort to stop Haredi violence, remains perseverant: “I’m going to ride my bike and run on my own public streets, and they are not going to stop me.”
