The Druze Fight for Israel: Should They Now Fight Alone?

In Tablet, Ofir Haivry and Yoram Hazony write that the U.S. fight against ISIS in Syria might benefit from backing “the establishment of a self-governing Druze region along the Israeli and Jordanian border.” Though the Druze community in Syria is still formally supportive of the government, its increasing independence makes it unlikely that the Assad regime would protect it from an ISIS or al-Qaida attack. Haivry and Hazony argue that “the creation of an autonomous and perhaps ultimately independent Druze region” would help the Druze defend themselves against the religious persecution that both ISIS and al-Qaida threaten to institute.
