The Culture Warrior in Winter

posted on July 14, 2014

At National Journal, Tiffany Stanley (R&P’s managing editor) profiles Richard Land, the former head of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention and prominent political voice of the Religious Right. In 2012, after Land’s radio comments about the shooting of Trayvon Martin were decried as both racist and plagiarized, he retired from his high-profile position and now works at Southern Evangelical Seminary near Charlotte. According to Stanley, Land’s descent is indicative of the evolution of the Religious Right, as the movement leaves behind its older generation. She writes, “If Land has moved on from his role as a leader of the Religious Right, the reverse is also true: The Religious Right is in the process of moving on from him.”
