The Archbishop of Canterbury: Dissolving the Anglican Church to Save It

posted on September 17, 2015

David A. Graham of The Atlantic discusses Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby’s decision to propose a looser affiliation of Anglican Churches at a January gathering amid conflict among its adherents. While Western Churches approve of female bishops and same-sex marriage, African Churches and traditionalists have grown upset with the failure of clergy leadership, leading to a large rift between progressives and conservatives. Graham writes, “Justin Welby was named archbishop of Canterbury with high hopes that he was the man who could save the Anglican Communion. Now it appears he may oversee its breakup—a calculated destruction intended, paradoxically, to save it.”
