That Old-Time Irreligion

posted on March 13, 2013

In The New York Times, Jennifer Michael Hecht reviews Susan Jacoby’s new book The Great Agnostic, a biographical account of Robert Green Ingersoll. Jacoby examines why Ingersoll, “a celebrity in his heyday at the end of the 19th century … is almost utterly unknown today, even by those who would admire him if they knew more,” Hecht writes. Famed for his speeches denouncing religion, “his agnosticism was what most set him apart, attracting devoted followers and fervent detractors.”
