Svrluga profiles Josh Powell, who, only after years of remedial classes, was able to overcome his severe lack of education. His sister, who is old enough to be in middle school, can’t read. “There were all these things that are part of this common collective of knowledge that 99 percent of people have that I didn’t have,” Josh said.
