Student Seeks Court Order to Don Eagle Feather at Graduationposted on June 2, 2015
The Associated Press’ Sudhin Thanawala reports that a Native American student in California has sued his school district for the right to wear an eagle feather at his graduation ceremony. “He wants to mark his achievement and honor his Native American heritage, according to the lawsuit filed in state court Monday,” Thanawala writes. “The tribe considers eagle feathers sacred and symbolic of a significant accomplishment.” The district argues that its dress code is neutral to religion, and allowing students to alter their graduation attire could disrupt the ceremony.
