Sikh Officer in U.S. Army Wins Fight for Religious Accommodation

In The Wall Street Journal, Paul Sonne reports, “The U.S. Army has issued a special waiver allowing a Sikh officer to keep a beard, uncut hair and wear a turban while on duty, after a five-month campaign that Sikh-rights advocates say shows lingering discrimination in the military.” While Captain Simratpal Singh was pleased with the outcome of his case, he urged the army to create guidelines that address religious practices in the military. “Hopefully this entire ordeal that I’ve gone through has brought it up to the forefront of the leadership, and they realize this process needs to be fixed,” Capt. Singh said.
