Selling The Sacred Cow: India’s Contentious Beef Industry

At The Atlantic Sen Desai Gopal reports that India’s beef market has become the second largest in the world, despite the fact that cows are revered by many of the country’s Hindus. However, various religious groups are now challenging the sacredness of the cow in Hinduism, allowing more illegal cow beef to make its way onto the market. “I have seen Hindus in the cow slaughtering business,” says Chetan Rajhans of Hindu Janajagriti Samiti, an organization that promotes Hindu values, “They are just not aware of their spiritual responsibilities, that they shouldn’t kill cows.”
