SCOTUS Opens Same-Sex Marriage in Several States
posted on October 7, 2014Josh Gerstein of POLITICO reports, “The Supreme Court has turned down all seven pending petitions urging the court to decide whether there is a right to same-sex marriage under the U.S. Constitution.” The move surprised many analysts, as the court had already stepped in to halt same-sex marriage in Utah and Virginia after their bans were overturned. The justices’ action clears the way for the legalization of same-sex marriage in as many as eleven states. “I think this is a terrific result, for now,” said Richard Socarides, a gay-rights advocate and former adviser to President Bill Clinton. “It’s a little bit incremental, but I think it’s a fantastic result and we should celebrate today.”
