Russia’s Orthodox Awakening

At Foreign Affairs, Nadieszda Kizenko discusses the fraying relationship between the Russian Orthodox Church and the state. While this is not the first time the church has produced prominent dissidents, it is the first time that the most influential discussions on the church and its role in the state are originating outside the clergy. “Indeed, the church’s main problem is that its support among the faithful is being outpaced by discontent about its ultraconservatism,” she writes. “If change from within is to occur, it will likely come from Russia’s new voices.”
