Rabbi who Cried to the Jews of Buchenwald: “You are Free”

The New York Times’ Maraglit Fox writes about the life and recent death of prominent Modern Orthodox Rabbi Herschel Schacter at the age of 95. When allied troops liberated Buchenwald during World War II, Schacter was the first Jewish chaplain to enter the concentration camp. He ran from barracks to barracks crying, “Peace be upon you, Jews, you are free!” He remained there for months leading religious services and helping survivors before returning to the U.S. and leading a synagogue in the Bronx until 1999.
