Pope Replaces Viganò, Controversial U.S. Ambassador

Crux reports, “Pope Francis on Tuesday named a new ambassador to the United States, tapping French Archbishop Christophe Pierre, formerly the Vatican’s envoy to Mexico, to take the place of Italian Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò.” Viganò first faced controversy last year, when he arranged an unannounced meeting between Francis and Kim Davis, the Kentucky county clerk who refused to grant same-sex marriage licenses. Pierre will likely take over the post sometime this year, and will be tasked with establishing relations with the new American president.
