Poll Shows Major Shift in Identity of U.S. Jews

Laurie Goodstein of The New York Times reports, “The first major survey of American Jews in more than 10 years finds a significant rise in those who are not religious, marry outside the faith and are not raising their children Jewish.” Although this movement toward non-religion follows the general population, many prominent Jewish leaders are concerned about this trend. “This should serve as a wake-up call for all of us as Jews,” said Jane Eisner, editor in chief of the Jewish Daily Forward, “to think about what kind of community we’re going to be able to sustain if we have so much assimilation.”
