At Art & Antiques, Jonathan Keats tells the story of Lothar Malskat, a master art forger who “restored” murals in bombed-out or decrepit German churches before and after WWII. Malskat actually re-created the murals: “He rendered his father as a prophet, and gave Christ the face of an old classmate. For the Virgin Mary, he had to look farther afield to find a suitable model, choosing a woman already widely worshipped—the Austrian movie star Hansi Knoteck.” Malskat’s germanized murals could be used to promote Third Reich nationalism and confirm the purity of the German bloodline.
