Pastor Frank Schaefer Never Expected to Speak for Gay Rights. His Son’s Gay Wedding Changed Everything.

Michelle Boorstein of The Washington Post profiles Pastor Frank Schaefer, a United Methodist minister who was defrocked last year for officiating at his son’s same-sex wedding. After three of his children came out in the early 2000s, Schaefer reconsidered his relatively traditional stance on LGBT equality. Over time, he found himself becoming an advocate who, he believes, can help to bridge the gap between “the liberal and conservative worlds” on this issue. Schaefer says, “I don’t judge people struggling with this issue. This took me many years. I just think I can help people because I’ve been through this myself.”
