On Religion, It’s Public Kasich vs. Private FitzGeraldposted on August 12, 2014
In The Columbus Dispatch, Darrel Rowland reports on religion’s role in the Ohio governor’s race between Gov. John Kasich and challenger Ed FitzGerald. “Although they espouse many of the same principles, the contrast in how Ohio’s gubernatorial candidates apply their Christianity to their public life and policies is stark,” Rowland writes. FitzGerald, the Democratic challenger, favors abortion rights and same-sex marriage as policy but refuses to discuss his personal religious opinions; the Republican John Kasich, on the other hand, frequently cites his personal religion in the context of public policy—a practice that has come under fire from both the right and the left during his tenure.
