Old Anti-Abortion Laws Are Taking on Unintended Meanings

For The Atlantic, Daniel K. Williams writes that recently revived anti-abortion laws are preventing women from receiving medical care in cases of miscarriage or medical complications from pregnancy. The Supreme Court’s decision to strike down the right to abortion this summer triggered the reimplementation of the decades-old statutes. Doctors and hospital administrators are now more hesitant to treat women in these circumstances for fear of prosecution given the recent public distrust of medical providers. He writes, “The language of the laws has not changed, but the political culture surrounding their enforcement has.”
