Myth Buster: Latinos Are Not “Natural Conservatives”

posted on October 1, 2013

At The American Prospect, Gabriel Arana reports on a recent poll from the Public Religion Research Institute that suggests Latinos disagree with Republicans on more than just immigration. The traditional notion that Latinos are conservative stems from the fact that this group is more religious than the general population. However, the PRRI survey shows that many Latinos oppose the party’s stance on gay-marriage and abortion, while the group’s religiosity is decreasing as well. “Republicans have searched for a quick fix to their electoral problems,” Arana writes, “but the PRRI report shows that if the GOP wants to make inroads with Latino and other non-white minority voters, it needs a lot more than a rebrand.”
