Muslims in the Military: the Few, the Proud, the Welcome

In The New York Times, Dave Philipps writes about Muslim Americans in the armed forces, including the challenges they face and the camaraderie they feel. Phillips writes that “15 years of war in Muslim countries has made serving in the military a cultural minefield.” And yet, troops told Phillips of religious accommodations and support they receive. Of his fellow Marines, Tayyib Rashid said, “I was often the first Muslim many of them had ever met, but there was no racism, no bigotry. It doesn’t really matter your faith: We were all Marines first.”
