Muslims Find a Welcoming Home in Famously Catholic Ireland

posted on April 22, 2013

Megan O’Neil of The Atlantic writes on the widespread acceptance of Muslim immigrants in Irish culture and society. The lack of backlash to the newly proposed 60,000-square-foot Islamic center highlights the successful relationship between the Republic of Ireland and its Muslim population. Said El Bauzari, an Irish immigrant from Morocco, commented, “There is a history that has shaped what an Irishman is. Any politician I listen to here in Ireland always reminds himself and the audience that we were and still are an emigrant nation. We should not forget our past, that we left home for a better future, and we should treat people who are coming to this country fairly.”
