Missing Plane Boosts Ethnic Unity in Malaysia

The Associated Press discusses the interfaith and ethnic unity in Malaysia that has resulted from the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. The population, made up of Malay, Chinese, and Indian people who identify as Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, Sikh, and Taoist, has struggled with religious differences and bigotry. However, Bridget Welsh, a political scientist from Singapore Management University observes, “In the shared sadness of loss, the tragedy has revealed and reinforced a strong sense of community. If anything, this is a silver lining of the tragedy.”
