Legal Questions Abound over Same-Sex Marriages in Mich.
posted on March 24, 2014Tresa Baldas and Paul Egan of The Detroit Free Press report that about 100 couples in Michigan are left in a legal gray area following a decision from the U.S. Sixth Court of Appeals to issue a temporary stay on the state’s same-sex marriage ban. The state government has remained largely silent on the issue, and no hearing has been scheduled to begin the appeals process. Jennifer Chapin-Smith, one of the many in legal limbo, said, “We’re already married in the eyes of God and our religious community, our family, friends and our neighbors. It’s just the state of Michigan that wouldn’t recognize reality.”
