Led By Davis, Democrats Defeat Abortion Legislation

Reporting on the Texas legislature, Becca Aaronson of The Texas Tribune writes, “The nation watched on Tuesday — and into Wednesday — as Democratic Sen. Wendy Davis and hundreds of impassioned reproductive rights advocates stalled proceedings and ultimately defeated controversial abortion legislation in a storm of screams and shouts as the clock struck midnight.” State Sen. Davis’ filibuster of the far-reaching abortion bill lasted almost 13 hours; she said the support she received “shows the determination and spirit of Texas women and people who care about Texas women.” Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst officially declared the bill dead near 3 a.m., and said he was “very frustrated” with the night’s results.
