Jimmy Carter and the Progressive Roots of Sunday School

At The Atlantic, Ruth Graham writes on the progressive history of Sunday School, in light of the thousands of people flocking to hear ailing former President Jimmy Carter teach at his Baptist Church in Georgia. Graham writes that Sunday School began in eighteenth-century England to educate the poor on their days off from work. The idea quickly spread and has since become “thoroughly woven into the fabric of American life, including its political life.”
