J. David Kuo, Onetime Leader of Bush’s Faith-Based Initiative, Dies at 44

posted on April 8, 2013

Karen Tumulty of The Washington Post writes on the death of evangelical Christian conservative, J. David Kuo, who died of brain cancer on April 5 at the age of 44. Kuo served as deputy director of President George W. Bush’s White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives until 2003 when he “accused the administration of failing to live up to the values it espoused,” Tumulty writes. In Kuo’s 2006 memoir, Tempting Faith: An Inside Story of Political Seduction, he critiqued Bush’s faith-based initiative as “a sad charade, to provide political cover to a White House that needed compassion and religion as political tools.”
