India’s New Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, Aims to Rebrand and Promote Yoga in India
posted on December 4, 2014At The Washington Post, Annie Gowen reports, “In recent weeks, Indian officials have begun efforts to reclaim yoga for the home team.” Yoga has long been a part of India’s spiritual heritage, though during the past two decades a more secular, Western version of the practice has become popular. Sheetal Shah, a senior director of the Hindu American Foundation which spearheaded the “Take Back Yoga” campaign, said, “Our idea was not to claim ownership; it was just to acknowledge that the philosophy behind yoga is based in Hinduism.”
