In Soweto and Beyond, Mandela Still Serves as a Beacon of Hope

At The New York Times, John Eligon and Nicholas Kulish write about the prayers and reflections in memoriam of the late Nelson Mandela. Mandela himself received his early education in Methodist schools and used to visit the Regina Mundi Catholic church, not far from his former home in Soweto. Virginia Sibanda, a housekeeper living north of Johannesburg but originally from Zimbabwe, said, “Nelson Mandela was a leader chosen by God, and now God has called him home. He was a leader not just for South Africa but for all Africans, and the world.”
