In Hasidic Enclaves, Failing Private Schools Flush With Public Moneyposted on September 14, 2022
Eliza Shapiro and Brian M. Rosenthal of The New York Times report that many private Hasidic schools in Brooklyn fail to educate their pupils in secular subjects in violation of state law. They write, “Even so, The Times found, the Hasidic boys’ schools have found ways of tapping into enormous sums of government money, collecting more than $1 billion in the past four years alone.” Moishy Klein, a former student at one of the schools, said, “It’s crazy that I’m literally not learning anything. It’s crazy that I’m 20 years old, I don’t know any higher order math, never learned any science.” The schools deny any wrongdoing and insist that they provide an adequate education to their students.
