In Egypt Charter, New Rights, but No Great Change
posted on December 3, 2013Kareem Fahim and Mayy El Sheikh of The New York Times report on the first draft of the preliminary Egyptian Constitution, made available for the first time to the public this weekend. While the new draft bans political parties, it also consolidates many of the institutions that hampered progress in the past, and refers to the freedom of belief as “absolute” rather than “protected.”
