If You Serve Your Country, Do You Have to Serve God?

posted on June 2, 2014

At The Atlantic, Emma Green reports on “recent debates about the role of humanists in the military.” While soldiers are—as of last month—allowed to “formally designate themselves” as humanists, many such servicemen feel that the military lacks the proper support resources for them. Currently, 93 percent of the military’s 2,856 chaplains are Christian, and none specifically identify as humanist. According to Major Ray Bradley, who pushed for soldiers to have the ability to formally identify as humanist, this absence is problematic because “when you say you’re a humanist, it’s your life system, belief system; it’s what drives you. Being a humanist means as much to an individual as being a Christian or a Muslim.”
