“I Had a Scary Dream About Donald Trump”: Muslim Parents Face a Tense Election
posted on October 26, 2016The New York Times’ Samantha Schmidt reports that Donald Trump’s anti-Muslim rhetoric has instilled fear in Muslim parents and their children. Schmidt writes about a Muslim family that resides in Staten Island. One of the children, 13 year-old Abubeckr, has witnessed Islamophobia at school: “In the hallways in Abubeckr’s school, boys will sometimes make sounds of bombs exploding and yell out ‘Allahu akbar’ — Arabic for ‘God is great’ — as he walks by. On the bus after school, a classmate once said to him, ‘You’re a terrorist, and your mom is a mastermind bomber.’”
