Hundreds Feared Dead in Migrant Shipwreck off Libya
posted on April 20, 2016Patrick Kingsley and Ruth Michaelson report, “Hundreds of people are feared to have drowned in the southern Mediterranean last week, in what would be the deadliest migrant shipwreck in months.” The shipwreck, which occurred several miles offshore, prompted calls from advocates to regularize migration routes and create safer paths from Africa to Europe. “Families in Egypt are weeping for their children who drowned in the sea,” said a Somali community leader. “I keep seeing pictures of the people who drowned on social media. Some of them were my students.”
