posted on February 10, 2021

For The Conversation, Deborah Whitehead writes that the National Prayer Breakfast reflects the complicated relationship between religion and politics in the U.S. over the last century. Joe Biden spoke at the annual event last week where he called on Americans to “confront and defeat political extremism, white supremacy and domestic terrorism.” The breakfast began as a network of the economic elite and has transformed into an exclusive who’s who of the political establishment tinged with religious undertones. Whitehead writes, “As the breakfast has expanded to become an interreligious, international event, now including 4,000 attendees from over 140 countries, it has also become a ready opportunity for networking and deal-making.”
