How Faith Groups Helped Pass the Climate Law

posted on September 8, 2022

E.A. Crunden of E&E News reports that faith-based environmental groups helped craft, lobby for, and ultimately pass the Inflation Reduction Act, which contains provisions designed to address climate change. Cruden writes, “Organizations representing Jews, Catholics, Quakers and other faiths all said they saw the legislation as a critical opportunity to take action on an issue they feel compelled to address as religious people.” Jose Aguto, the executive director of Catholic Climate Covenant, said, “The focus of our effort was based on the word ‘encounter,’ which Pope Francis has used a lot — to meet people and encounter them, persuade and be in fellowship, not to demand. We asked people to look into their hearts and their faith, if they do have one, and incorporate that in their decision-making process.”
