How Donald Trump Could End the Republican Lock on the Mormon Vote
posted on March 22, 2016At The Atlantic, Jack Jenkins reports that Donald Trump is struggling to appeal to Mormon voters ahead of Utah’s primary today. Trump’s rhetoric against marginalized groups resonates poorly with the LDS Church, as members historically also had to overcome oppression in order to establish themselves in the United States. “Utah exists today because foreign countries refused to grant the wishes of a misguided president and his secretary of state,” wrote Utah Governor Gary Herbert. “In Utah, the First Amendment still matters. That will not change so long as I remain governor.”
