How an Underground Network of Ministers and Rabbis Helped Women Get Abortions Before Roe

posted on October 4, 2022

For The New Republic, Becca Andrews writes that a group of faith leaders formed an abortion referral service, the Clergy Consultation Service on Abortion, that served women across the country in the years before the landmark Roe v. Wade decision. The group eventually became the largest abortion referral service of the era, serving at least 250,000 women. The Rev. Farley Wheelwright, one of the ministers involved in the group, described their mission in the Wall Street Journal at the time, writing, “There is no abortion underground … We’re helping to bring abortion above ground, to make it open, respectable, and eventually legal for any woman to end her pregnancy whenever she and her doctor feel it’s the best course.”
